Early Dismissal for ASD-N Students for Solar Eclipse on April 8th

The big day is here!

This is a reminder that ASD-N students will have an early dismissal on Monday, April 8th.

In fact, it’s a very rare and historical event that is taking place April 8th over North America – a total solar eclipse. We have not experienced one of those here in New Brunswick since the year 932!

What does this mean? As the Moon aligns perfectly between Earth and the Sun, temporary darkness will sweep across parts of the country, and our region in New Brunswick will be right in the path. Parts of our District will even fall into the solar eclipse path of totality!

Please note that all schools in ASD-N will finish at noon on April 8th, to allow students to safely arrive at their after-school destinations before the eclipse begins.

All students will have received eclipse viewing glasses before being dismissed.

Pink Shirt Day is Recognized Across ASD-N

In 2007, Berwick Nova Scotia, after a new student at their school was bullied for wearing a pink shirt, two grade 12 students bought 50 pink shirts and encouraged their classmates to wear pink. The next day they went to distribute the shirts and to their surprise the majority of students arrived wearing pink!  With that act of kindness, Pink Shirt Day was born.

In recognition of the Berwick event, Nova Scotia proclaimed the second Thursday of September “Stand Up Against Bullying Day.” In 2008, British Columbia proclaimed February 27th to be the provincial anti-bullying day, and the movement has continued to grow. In 2012, the United Nations declared May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day, and now the last Wednesday each February is Canada’s national Pink Shirt/anti-bullying day.

Many countries now recognize specific days for raising awareness about the prevention of bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion. In Canada, many students have heard the Pink Shirt Day message from kindergarten through to their high school graduation. The movement continues to grow.

To learn more about Pink Shirt Day, you are invited to visit pinkshirtdaycanada.ca.

Thank you to all students and staff across the District who wore pink today, to promote kindness and inclusion in our schools.

Construction to begin on new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Campbellton

21 February 2024

CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – Construction on the new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Campbellton is set to get underway this spring, replacing two of the oldest schools in the province.

“Our students are the future leaders of New Brunswick,” said Premier Blaine Higgs. “This school will provide a high-quality environment for students in the Campbellton area to learn, grow and become equipped for their next stages of life.”

The new school on Arran Street, next to Sugarloaf Senior High School, has been designed to accommodate nearly 400 students. The school will replace Campbellton Middle School and Lord Beaverbrook School, which are 97 and 63 years old respectively.

“We are excited for construction to get underway to modernize the learning experience for students in Campbellton,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Bill Hogan. “Ensuring we can meet the educational needs of our students by updating aging infrastructure helps us on our path to building a better education system.”

Set to open in September 2026, the new facility will include amenities such as music and art rooms, technology rooms, science labs, a gym and an early childhood development room, in addition to a three-floor classroom wing.

“This new school will be a terrific addition to the Anglophone North School District,” said district superintendent Dean Mutch. “I am just so excited for this community. It will provide our students and staff with the most up-to-date learning environment and give them the encouragement to thrive as they dream, create and innovate.”

A sum of $16.4 million has been allocated in the 2024-25 capital budget to begin construction. The total project cost is estimated at $39.66 million.
